A recipe for you to make your own yoga mat cleaner. It’s inexpensive and smells divine (or as one of my yoga students puts it, it smells good enough to eat!)
In a spray bottle mix the following:
150ml witch hazel
40 drops tea tree essential oil
15 drops lavender essential oil
15 drops lemongrass essential oil
Shake the bottle well before each use. Spray on your yoga mat and wipe down with a damp cloth. For extra anti-bacterial effect I use a No More Chemicals cleaning cloth, which locks in bacteria until the cloth is washed. Allow your mat to dry fully before rolling it up again.
Qualities of the essential oils are many, but I use them in this preparation for the following properties:
Tea Tree is antibacterial, antiseptic, antiviral and a fungicide.
Lavender is antibacterial, antiseptic and antiviral.
Lemongrass is antimicrobial, antiseptic, bactericidal.
Many yoga mats are machine washable. However keeping them clean by using a spray such as this is kinder to the environment as it eliminates the need for machine washing. Plus your yoga mat will smell welcoming each time you roll it out. In a studio environment where mats are used by many students, it’s great way to keep the mats sanitised between each use.
